Styles of Lighting and where they Work
Many people think it is okay to randomly pick light fixtures for their homes, but there are many reasons why this isn’t the best way to approach this decision. For one thing, it is important that each room have the correct amount of light. If you have a kitchen that isn’t bright enough, not only could meals turn out badly, but someone could get injured in the process of making those bad meals. Likewise, a bright bedroom could take away from a romantic mood. And there are other rooms where the mood or purpose changes, such as the living room or dining room, and for these rooms it is important to have lighting options to fit these different situations. Another important reason you don’t want to just randomly pick fixtures is that they can serve well to accent design, or even be the focal point of a style or theme. By picking light fixtures like chandeliers without this consideration, you won’t be able to achieve the complete décor in a room.
Many types of lights are available, and if you are looking for a fixture that doesn’t supply much light, but works more as an accent for the room’s design, wall sconces might be perfect. This type of light fixture is mounted on the wall and doesn’t provide a whole lot of light, so they work great as a piece of artwork that supplies a romantic or relaxing atmosphere. They work well hanging on the wall of any room as an accent piece, and serve well as the lighting for areas in the home that don’t need a whole lot of light, such as hallways and staircases. You can find wall sconces made of glass, wrought iron, and many other materials, so it is easy to find some that will match any décor perfectly.
Another type of light fixture that doesn’t supply a whole lot of light is lamps. Floor lamps supply more light than table lamps, but they still don’t typically brightly light a large room. Instead, they serve well to provide a room with a small amount of light in a certain area. Floor lamps are available in many styles, with a variety of shades to choose from, so you can easily match any style with them. Table lamps are another great option, and these typically light one particular area, making them great for work spaces or on an end table next to a chair. They supply the perfect amount of light for reading or doing any other hobby, and you can place as many as you need in a room to be able to supply the perfect amount of light at any given time. Table lamps can be made of a variety of materials and are available in almost any color or style imaginable, so any décor can easily be matched. An added bonus to lamps as lighting is that these are removable fixtures, so if you ever move they can go with you to your new home.
Chandeliers are an excellent light fixture that will provide a room with plenty of light, even large rooms. Crystal chandeliers are the classiest version of chandeliers, and these can even come with dimmer switches so you can control the amount of light output at any given time. This makes crystal chandeliers a great option for entryways, living rooms, dining rooms, and many other areas in the home. wrought iron chandeliers are the more traditional type of chandelier and these offer a traditional old-world style to any room. These look fabulous in dining rooms and other formal areas, as the wrought iron adds a hardness in style to any room. Chandeliers not only serve the purpose of providing light, but they make an excellent centerpiece to any room, and can easily be accented with other artwork or furnishings.
Pendant lights are another type of hanging light similar to wrought iron chandeliers, but don’t look quite as upscale. They are available in many materials, including brushed nickel, copper, stainless steel, and other metals. They can have many different designs and colors for style, so you can easily find one that will work great in any room. There are versions with multiple bulbs that can easily light a whole room, and these work great in living rooms and kitchens. There are also single-bulb versions that look nice and provide direct light, making them a great kind to hang over a table. Whatever purpose you have for your lighting, you can easily find one that will set the mood for any room as well as work great as a decorative piece.
