Proper Usage and Storage of Paint Brushes
Before the brushes are used again any water in the bristles should be shaken out and the brushes worked out on a piece of waste wood and then wiped with a dry cloth. Brushes which are to be stored for any length of time should be thoroughly cleaned of paint by washing the bristles in paraffin or turpentine.
The brush should then be wiped to remove as much of the softening medium as possible and then thoroughly washed in warm soapy water. After rinsing the brushes the metal part holding the bristles should be wiped dry so that they do not rust, and this part of the brush wiped over with an oily rag before wrapping the paper in greaseproof paper. Anybody who owns metal sculptures and metal wall art (or even just metal wall grills) knows that rust comes fast and hard, it is easier to prevent it than it is to get rid of it.
It will be found best to store all brushes in a warm dry place and flat on a shelf In the case of brushes that have been inadvertently left with paint in them which has hardened the bristles, the brush can be restored to useful life by treating it with one of the patent paint solvents but the solvent used must be thoroughly neutralized by carefully washing the bristles of the brush in turpentine before it is used for painting.
The brushes used for distemper should always be thoroughly washed with water and after rinsing, distemper brushes should be stored by suspending them by a loop of string through a hole drilled in the top of the handle. Dusting brushes should also be washed and rinsed before storing them. Paint kettles should be thoroughly cleaned after they have been used, and if the paint has dried in the kettle it may be cleaned by placing some rag soaked with turpentine or paraffin in the actual kettle and putting a match to the rag.
Make sure any wall art you have is kept safe. Cold rolled steel wall art, pretty much any steel art creations, can stand to get a bit of paint on them, but any kind of wood art will be doomed. The paint can then be easily removed while it is soft. Steps should be thoroughly washed or scrubbed after use and any metal parts of the steps rubbed over with a rag before storing them.
The tools and equipment listed and described in this article include the essential ones that will be required by the beginner. In many cases it would not be found necessary to purchase all the tools at the same time and the beginner’s outfit may be supplemented by the addition of extra tools as their use becomes necessary, to extend the scope of the work that can be done by the amateur home decorator.
When preparing to decorate a place of living, it is important to take note of the home décor strewn about. Metal wall décor and wrought iron wall hangings can go with almost any color because they are, generally, neutral. If the metal is imbued with color however, you would do well to make sure it does not offset the color of the walls, and vice versa.
